The Olympic Women’s Wrestling Team just finished a week long training camp in Oahu, Hawaii. We were staying at the Hilton Village in Honolulu. The hotel was right on the beach. It was amazing; doesn’t get much better than that! Don’t get me wrong we had a week of hard training. We trained every day at 8am and 5pm. In between training sessions we enjoyed the sun. I am a person that burns very easily so I had to pace myself; I didn’t burn but I don’t think I changed color either.
Most days we didn’t get to venture far from our hotel but there were a few days we did and saw some incredible sights. One afternoon we went to Hanauma Bay and went snorkelling. I didn’t see any turtles but I saw some pretty friendly fish. Another day we took a drive to the North shore. We went to a macadamia nut plantation and Turtle Bay. Both were pretty cool, we got to see the massive trees the macadamia nuts grow on and there were a lot of free samples. No wrestler can refuse free samples. At turtle bay we finally got to see some giant turtles chilling on the beach and we went body surfing. All and all a good afternoon.
On the last day the team opted to go for a hike up Diamond Head instead of having practice. It was about a 30-minute hike up to the top of the volcano. The hike was worth it! The view was incredible. The trip was amazing. I am ready to get back to Canada and get back to a normal training routine.
